Magpies and Hare: Cui Bo's Magical Realism and Social Commentary
Afreda Murck, Independent Historian of Chinese Visual Culture
Thursday, November 12, 6:00 p.m. | The Farrell Auditorium | Free

Cui Bo's superb Magpies and Hare of 1061 is celebrated as one of China's greatest realistic paintings, often compared to Albrecht Durer's Hare of 1502. Realism, however, is not all that is admirable in Cui Bo's painting, now in the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Murck will argue that through an artful combination of traditional metaphors Cui Bo created a brilliant commentary on a royal scandal of 1060.
