A period of rapid economic growth, expanding urbanization, and increasing industrialization, the Gilded Age was a time of great change for all, and women were no exception. Though many women maintained traditional roles, working as domestic servants or focusing on handicrafts and home beautification, the sphere of opportunity for women was also broadening as they began to venture out in public alone, find more job opportunities, and become more involved with social and political issues. Torrie Hester, assistant professor at Saint Louis University, presents this look at the changing world of women in the Gilded Age.
