In September 1990, 200 women met at the home of Mary and Leon Strauss to hear Elizabeth Barlow Rogers discuss the restoration of Central Park in New York and to hear about plans for restoring Forest Park. The spark was ignited. The listeners were inspired. The result was the formation of a group — now numbering more than 500 — called The Women’s Committee of Forest Park Forever, dedicated to raising funds to support specially designated projects in Forest Park.
Each year, the Women’s Committee hosts the Hiram W. Leffingwell Award Luncheon, also known as the “Hat Luncheon” at the World’s Fair Pavilion. Named for the man who first envisioned the dream of a “magnificent breathing space,” the luncheon honors corporations, foundations, and individuals that have made significant contributions to the restoration of the Park. More than 1,100 guests don hats in every shape and size in anticipation of winning terrific prizes for their creative or stylish millinery.
Our Mission: To restore, maintain and sustain Forest Park as one of America’s great urban public parks, for the enjoyment of all ~ now and forever.
