Six Super Secret Spots to Visit in the Park
Shhhhh, this is a secret post! Often when showing people around some of my favorite spots in Forest Park, one of them will say, “I never knew this was here, and I have been coming to this Park for 20 years.”
These six spots are for those who had no idea how easy it is to “get away” in St. Louis without traveling 60 miles west. Let me lead you into the secret world of Forest Park. Let’s get lost, shall we?
Peaceful Lily Pond Near the Jewel Box
Just north of the Vandeventer Place Gates is a pond with a serene scene just waiting to be sketched. There are several benches around the area to rest and take in the sounds of the birds.
Hidden Creek Savanna
Located between Emerson Central Fields and The Muny, Hidden Creek Savanna is just that – hidden. Thanks to the prescribed burn that took place here in January of 2019, this 3-acre restoration site is full of blooming wildflowers right now. There are trails within it, waiting to be explored.
Pine Tree Circle in Kennedy Forest
Walk along the dual path on Skinker and enter the chat path to Kennedy Forest and you will stumble upon this circle of unique pine trees in Kennedy Forest. Bonus tip, bring a blanket and lie down to have this fantastic perspective of the tops of the trees.
West Pine Woodland
Located in a quiet area on the northeast side of the Park, the 6-acre West Pine Woodland was created as a distinct and walkable stretch of forest by Forest Park Forever horticulturists in 2015.
Chess Tables Near Steinberg Skating Rink
For the last stop, don’t forget to bring some chess pieces and make your way to the outdoor chess tables just north of Steinberg Skating Rink. The peaceful atmosphere makes for an epic spot to think about your next move.
Now that the secret is out, here is a little transportation tip that is not so secret to help you get started on your journey. Hop on or hop off using the Forest Park Explorer (for free on the weekend) to make your way around the entire Park exploring these secret spots for a day-long adventure.
