How To Keep a Nature Journal

This week I have been outside enjoying the weather and observing the nature around me. One option to document your observations like a scientist and artist is to keep a nature journal. All you need is a notebook, writing utensils and nature to observe. There are so many ways to fill your journal. Children of all ages (including adults!) can do it #AtHomeWithForestPark or in the Park. Let’s look at some ways to journal:

  • Make leaf or tree rubbings

  • Pen a poem or another piece of writing

  • Track the weather with charts

  • Tape natural materials and caption

  • Draw found animal tracks (what do they belong to?)

  • Make nature stamps (collect objects and paint them and press into your journal)

  • Smear some juice from a berry or fruit

Some more nature journaling tips: For added fun, use a variety of materials (watercolor, pen, colored pencil) to capture your observations. Select a spot to observe in all four seasons and notice how it changes. Field guides and nature books are helpful tools to use while drawing. Enjoy!
