On the Grounds
Steinberg Rink
The restored Steinberg Rink at the heart of the Glade retains its 27,140 square-foot surface—one-and-a-half times the size of an NHL rink—and gains a state-of-the-art, efficient and sustainable carbon dioxide (CO₂) refrigeration system. More than 15 miles of pipes beneath the rink will create a consistent frozen surface and the best possible ice-skating experience. Because The Glade is made for year-round activity, the rink will be ready for roller skating in warmer months. The railings can be moved or removed entirely to create an open area accessible from all sides.
Crawford Taylor Foundation Fountains
The Crawford Taylor Foundation Fountains is a 5,000-square-foot splash pad and water play area that’s free and open to all for warm weather fun. The Fountains’ multi-level waterfall is reminiscent of beautiful cascades found elsewhere in Forest Park, while its sail-shaped water jets are inspired by the toy boats children floated in the Park’s waterways in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Designed for kids and adults, the fountains include dry zones where caregivers can be near the action without becoming immersed in it!
Farr Family Lawn Terrace
The Farr Family Lawn Terrace is a multipurpose outdoor space adjacent to Steinberg Rink. It’s designed to allow guests to lounge in a comfortable seating area while keeping an eye on the action. The visually striking but minimalist shade structure that spans the length of the rink’s west side will provide open and airy protection from the summer sun and serve as a cozy covered space where rentable Rinkside Bays will include fire pits in cooler months.
Clever Little Girl Community Lawn and Emerson Green
Before construction of the Glade, the Park’s dual recreational pathway cut through the grassy area near Steinberg Rink. Now this popular path winds along the west side of the Taylor Kindle River, which allows for two new expansive, uninterrupted green spaces in The Glade: the Clever Little Girl Community Lawn adjacent to the Steinberg facility and the Emerson Green to its south. These beautifully landscaped recreation areas will be tranquil settings for everyday activity, lounging, picnicking and relaxing with new seating along the river’s edge. They’ll also be engaging new spaces for Storytime in Forest Park, Play Day in the Park, field trips and more. We’re excited to strengthen our partnerships with local nonprofits, schools and the cultural institutions within the Park to create new family-friendly outdoor programs!
Dual Recreational Pathway
The six-mile dual recreational pathway encircles the Park, connecting with other paths along the way. Both gravel and paved surface pathways are open for all to use, but the gravel “heels” surface is meant to accommodate walkers, joggers and visitors traveling at a slower velocity on their feet. The paved “wheels” surface is intended for those on bikes, wheelchairs, roller skates or roller blades.
Kingshighway Park Entrance and East Hillside
A new entrance to Forest Park includes a fully accessible pathway graded for wheelchair access that leads down a wooded hillside to the second story of the Pavilion at the Glade. This path includes multiple rest spots with benches and connects Forest Park to the WashU Medical Campus, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Central West End neighborhood. It will intersect with the future Brickline Greenway, which will link Forest Park visitors to downtown St. Louis, the Gateway Arch, Fairground Park and Tower Grove Park.
